We were recently asked to complete a little research to see if we held anything in our archives about our local Home Guard. We were thrilled to find a copy of a photo of Compton & Puttenham Home Guard which appears to include Mike Lloyd's father for him.
Mike writes "He (Harry Lloyd) was a chauffeur/gardener working for a Mrs Gordon Walker who lived at 'Overponds' at Cuttmill, 1.5 miles from Puttenham. We lived in 'Overponds Bungalow' nearby. When WWII broke out I was born and he was 40yrs old having served in the First World War at 18 and then a further seven years in North West India. He retired and came home with the rank of Colour Sergeant at the age of 27. Hence when the Home Guard was formed in 1939 he was able to continue to carry his rank of Sergeant. They were busy days for those who could not go to fight, my father also did shift work in a factory in Elstead as well as everything else. " Do you have a local connection and a story you'd like to share with us? |
